While self-isolating, I especially longed to go on a seaside vacation. So when the summer release of Windbound caught my attention, I purchased the game post-haste, believing it to be a blend between Zelda and Raft... Though in this case, it might be more accurate to just call it "bland"☹️
Let's start with the positives: the visuals are pleasant, the music is gorgeous, and the game can even occasionally inspire a sense of real adventure. It is also short - a complete playthrough will only take around 7 hours. During the first two out of the five chapters in total, I have thoroughly enjoyed exploring the in-game world. Unfortunately, the constant repetition of the same gameplay elements, requiring the player to repeatedly light torches on identical looking islands (introducing one solitary new biome per chapter), soon made me feel stuck in a kind of a buggy Groundhog Day scenario🤔
The central idea of Windbound has potential but the plot simply wasn't developed well enough and the good in it ended up being spread very thin. The story is told via short cutscenes, adding up to about 9.5 minutes of cinematics. 😮
The game's genre is survival/action-adventure and it comes with two difficulty settings. Dying normally will erase all progress from the beginning of the chapter, while story mode allows the player to keep the contents of their inventory (12-16 slots). In essence, this means that Windbound encompasses a number of roguelike elements.
The survival portion of the game comes down to keeping Kara, your gluttonous protagonist, well-fed. The heroine has quite the appetite and requires three times the amount of food a typical human adult can consume in one day.
The battle system is also rather strange, with sluggish controls that instill the impression of playing as a humanoid turtle instead of a nimble young girl.
The crafting system seems to exist solely to confuse me as it isn't bound to the storyline in any meaningful way and a particularly persistent adventurer could potentially finish the game without putting together a single item.
While I liked tailwind sailing across the map, feeling like my boat was about to soar up into the sky, going against the current is painfully tedious and takes way too long, unnecessarily padding out the time it takes to complete certain objectives.
You probably think that I might have pointed out a disproportioned number of flaws. Still, the main idea is that Windbound actually looks really nice and holds a lot of promise, but despite the fact that the developers plan to release several free patches down the line, I'm not burning with passion at the thought of returning to the game's world☹️
Final score: 4/10 hungry voyagers
