It is impossible to talk about old-school RPGs without touching upon Obsidian Entertainment's contribution to the genre as well as the studio's Pillars of Eternity, a title that thundered across the video games scene as the true heir to the classics with its expansive dialogue trees, impactful player choice, and well-written characters. The first thing that struck me when I started playing was just how much the game wants to part with its tabletop roots. Not completely, mind you – even some of the races here can easily be seen as harkening back to D&D rulebooks (the Godlike, for instance, are basically slightly reimagined Planetouched). At the same time, the game strives to stand out. It offers a detailed, original world with its own cosmology and universal order. The history of the lands you're going to traverse is rather curious too. It is, in fact, interesting enough to make one wanna learn more by reading up on in-game literature... Yes, ensuring the setting's internal consistency has become a norm nowadays, but that wasn't always the case. I would love to see the series continued in the third and subsequent chapters, but realize that nostalgia isn't always a potent enough fuel for commercial success. At this point, the triumph of the original Pillars of Eternity might even be irreproducible. #pillarsofeternity #poe
