Hi!
About two months ago, I decided to replay again Firewatch and was finally able to appreciate the game’s ending.
The year is 1989 and one of Wyoming national parks is looking for a firewatch lookout.
Our protagonist, Henry, decides to take the job. In reality, he is running away from personal problems: his wife Julia suffers from an advanced stage of dementia. For several years now, Henry has been taking care of her, watching the light of recognition slowly fade away from her eyes.
Henry started drinking. Soon his wife’s relatives from Australia came and took Julia away.
And so Henry is going to Wyoming, where his new boss Delilah will become his only friend…
This is a story about very important and so very human things in life. When I finished the game for the first time all the way back in 2015, I felt terribly disappointed. My expectations for an intriguing explanation as to what was going on in the game had been thoroughly dashed. This frustration is exactly what made me want to give Firewatch another go five years later and...
Damn, that ending is actually brilliant! So simple, so natural… and therefore – quite brilliant.
More often than not, life is chaos. Sometimes events are utterly devoid of meaning, making them feel incomplete. You may be someone’s fiancé making plans for the future, when suddenly – BAM!.. Without warning, you’re single again.
Why didn't Delilah want to continue her relationship with Henry? By the final hour, we kind of expected that once they finally see each other, one of them would propose on the spot or something as they are flying together in that helicopter into the sunset.
Whoever said that there absolutely must be an incredible twist to every story?
Sometimes things just end, easy as that.
Just an episode from another person's life… Infinitely sad but real nonetheless.
